Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) to ban all Russian-owned and bred cats in international competition.

In a statement posted to its website, FIFe said it “cannot just witness these atrocities and do nothing,” and decided that “no cat bred in Russia may be imported and registered in any FIFe pedigree book outside of Russia. … No cat belonging to exhibitors living in Russia may be entered at any FIFe show outside Russia.” The restrictions are in place until May 31, 2022.

FIFe considers itself the “United Nations of Cat Federations,” and says on its website it comprises 42 full members from 40 countries.

Officials with FIFE said they would be donating money to help cat breeders in Ukraine, The Washington Post reported.

The reaction to the announcement was mixed on FIFe’s Facebook page, where it announced the decision as well, with one commenter writing, “Absolutely ridiculous. Russian breeders should not be punished for a war that isn’t of their making. What does this achieve except to hurt breeding programs, breeders and their cats?” Another wrote, “Bravo. Doing nothing is not a solution either.”
